    Intuition pays off.

    I hadn’t gotten a new cell phone in 4 or 5 years. It was a long time. My 2 year contract had expired a few years ago and I didn’t see any new phones in the store that I liked better than the phone I had – a Samsung 890. It was great with calls, took photos, video, etc. The only thing it didn’t do was play realtone ringtones or have any memory to store MP3s etc. But I didn’t really care. The battery life was really long and it was always very reliable. I also didn’t want to jump into a new 2 year contract with another phone that would be surpassed by a phone with newer and better technology within a few months. So I waited.

    Over the past year, I’ve been popping into Verizon every so often to look at their new phones. I had heard good things about their Voyager phone, but when I looked at it in the store, I just didn’t like it. I had popped in to check out their Venus phones, and some of the new Samsung phones, but I didn’t like any of them.

    Over the past few months, I had been starting to get phone envy. More and more people had been texting me (which my phone wasn’t very good with), and I would see people using all of these new gadgets that flipped and opened and slided and browsed the internet and accessed email, etc. My phone only flipped open to make a call. It didn’t do any of that other stuff. Yet, every time that I walked into a Verizon store, I was never happy with any of their phones. (I wouldn’t even think of switching to AT&T or Sprint or T-Mobile since they all have such crappy service in this area). I needed to upgrade to a newer phone but all of my instincts were telling me not to. So I didn’t.

    About a month or two ago, I heard about the new Samsung Glyde phone that had just came out. It was supposed to be comparable with Verizon’s Voyager and Apple’s iPhone, so I thought I would go to the store and check it out. When I tested it out in the store, I really liked it. I was like, “Yeah, this is a cool phone.” But even though I liked it, my instincts still told me not to buy it. I know the price tag had something to do with it. I didn’t feel like dropping $200 – $250 on a new phone. I figured I would wait and maybe the price would come down.

    I went back to look at the phone 2 or 3 times within the past month or so to reconsider buying it, but I still had a really strong vibe not to. I kept hearing “No.” I would always say “Ok.” and then walk out of the store. It was strange. I had never had phone issues like this before. In the past, if I saw a phone that I really liked, and my contract had expired, I would just jump in and make the switch. I never had this feeling of “No.”

    A few weeks ago, I received a post card in the mail from Verizon Wireless saying that my phone needed an immediate software update. It seems that if I did not bring my phone into Verizon for a free software update before July 1st, it would no longer work on their network.

    Twice within the past week, when I was out shopping or running errands, and I was conveniently passing a Verizon store, I stopped in to have the software upgraded. Both times the store was so busy and the lines were so long at their tech. counters that I didn’t want to wait and just left.

    Last night, again while conveniently passing a Verizon store on my way home, I stopped in to have my phone’s software upgraded. This time there was no line at the service counter, but the guy behind it told me that they couldn’t do the upgrade because it takes 45 minutes and they close in 45 minutes. He said I would have to come back the next morning. Needless to say, I was kinda pissed off about having to come back.

    This morning, I was at Verizon at 11am, dropping my phone off for the necessary upgrade. They gave me a receipt and told me to come back in an hour. An hour later, I returned to find out that the software upgrade they performed fried my phone. “What???” I said in disbelief. “It fried your phone”, the tech. rep. told me. “What does that mean?” I couldn’t believe my ears and needed clarification. “It means that your phone doesn’t work any more, it’s dead. The circuit boards were fried.” he responded. “So what happened to all of the information in my phone? All of my phone numbers and photos and videos and stuff?” I asked. He said they were gone. There was no way to retrieve them because the phone wouldn’t go on. I was livid.

    “So what are you going to do about this? You ruined my phone!” I said. “We’ll provide you with a replacement phone.” He told me. He was ridiculously calm. “Well, it better be another Samsung because those are the only one’s I like!” I was about to turn into a raving lunatic.

    He walked me around to the wall of phones and pointed out two Samsung flip phones similar to the one that I had. I looked at them and didn’t like either of them. And that’s when I felt “Yes”. “Let me ask you a question…” I said. “I don’t like either of these flip phones, but I would consider this Samsung Glyde as a replacement. Would you be able to do that for me?” He told me he would have to check with his manager and walked into the back of the store. I waited around for a good 15 minutes before getting another rep to find out where the first rep was. He came back out and told me that his manager had okayed the replacement and they were just setting it up with my number and account and it would be another 15 minutes or so. I thanked him and told him I would return for the phone in about 20 minutes.

    A half hour later, I walked out of Verizon completely happy and satisfied with my new and free Samsung Glyde phone. (Although it did cost me the loss of all of the data on my old phone and several hours of inconvenience) I didn’t even have to open a new contract or anything, it was a straight replacement. I was so glad that I had listened to my intuition all along and didn’t make a purchase sooner. Everything that I had wanted had just come to me. I had my new Samsung Glyde phone, I didn’t have to pay anything for it, and I didn’t have to enter into a new 2 year contract. It’s kinda unbelievable.
