Found – on the street during a walk
I wasn’t feeling very well. I had eaten and/or drank something that didn’t agree with me the night before when I went out with some friends for the 4th of July. We went to one of my favorite NYC restaurants, Becco, for dinner where I had the all-you-care-to-eat three pasta special. I was so full, I skipped dessert. Then we walked a few blocks down to the West Side to watch the big Macy’s fireworks. It was so crowded and poorly planned. It took us over an hour to get our car out of the garage where it was parked nearby. We drove back to NJ and decided to go bowling. I had a few drinks at the bowling alley which I think are what upset my stomach.
Anyway, after eating mostly fruit and veggies all day, I decided that I should probably go for a nice long walk, maybe that would help to make me feel better. I remember thinking, as I started the walk, that I needed a sign. The weekend before, I had looked at a house that I was interested in, but for various reasons, was a bit undecided about it. It had a nice layout, and lots of potential, but it also needed a new electrical box, and additional outlets, and quite a bit of other work. I had a really good feeling about the house, but it wasn’t a 100% go-ahead feeling. So I asked for some kind of a sign when I started out on this walk. I think I actually asked for a dime. I said something like, “send me a dime if I should be buying this house”.
Less than 5 minutes later, I looked down and noticed something that looked like a coin, but was oval, right in my path on the street. I stopped above it and saw that it was plain, but it looked like one of those coin things that you smush at a tourist attraction, you know, put a penny in, and out comes an oblong imprinted souvenir. So I bent down and picked it up and turned it over. It said “Guardian Angel Ellis Island” on it. I thought, “That’s strange. I was just at Ellis Island 5 days ago when the ferry stopped there on the way to Liberty Island”. But I didn’t think much else about it. I just put it in my pocket and walked another 4 miles around the neighborhood.
Now, I’ve gotten pretty behind schedule when it comes to posting about these dimes and finds. I have a little dayplanner calendar that I make notes in when I find a dime to keep track of where and when so I don’t forget before I post them online. Up until I sat down to blog today, I was three dimes and one guardian angel behind. I had to consult my calendar as I’m posting to reference the correct dates.
What I just realized as I’m writing this post about the Guardian Angel Ellis Island coin is that I found it on July 5th. 5 years ago, on July 5th 2004, my grandfather died. He was born in this country only a few years after his parents had immigrated by boat and arrived through Ellis Island. Was the Guardian Angel Ellis Island coin a sign from him? Is he watching over me like a Guardian Angel? Will he be watching over me if I buy that house? My grandfather literally built his house with his own two hands. He knew more about houses than anyone I’ve ever known. I don’t know…. Now I need another sign. I need some kind of validation that the Guardian Angel Ellis Island coin was from him if it indeed was.
