    The Pictorial Key To Tarot

    January 5, 2008

A Pictorial Key To The TarotI’m in the process of reading this book. It’s not an easy read. Written by Arthur Edward Waite about a hundred years ago, although it is in English, the language used is quite foreign to today’s manner of communication. I feel like I’m reading Shakespeare or Chaucer where you sometimes have to read the same sentence a few times just to figure out it’s meaning.

Unfortunately, what I’ve found is that although it is well written and the author seems to be extremely smart and knowledgeable about the subject matter, it really doesn’t say much. I read the chapter about the history of the Tarot and really don’t know anything about the history of it. He spent more time explaining what wasn’t the history of the Tarot, than what was. I would have liked more substance and depth, but maybe back when it was written, they just didn’t have the information.

I’m currently in the section where he goes through each card one by one and explains the background and meanings. Unfortunately, I’m having the same problem with this section. I read the explanation for a card, but it doesn’t really say anything. He uses more text to explain what isn’t the meaning of the card than what actually is. But I’m plowing through the book. Hopefully, should be done within a week.

What is kinda strange is that I have found that if I read this book right before I go to bed, I can’t sleep. It’s really weird. I always read before going to sleep. The first night I was reading the book, then went to sleep, and it took me hours to get comfortable and fall asleep. The next night, I was reading a different book and fell right to sleep no problem. Then another night, I was reading this Tarot book again, and once again, I couldn’t sleep. Was it just a coincidence? I don’t know. If it happens a third time…
